Elaine Merriweather, Teacher Trainer

“One of my favorite quotes is by Ben Sweetland – ‘We cannot hold a torch to light another’s path without brightening our own.’ This perfectly expresses my approach to this journey of teaching and learning.”

Elaine Merriweather has over 25 years of experience working with young children and families. She believes that access to high quality education beginning at birth is the right of every student and the responsibility of us all, which is a sentiment we share at TWA. Her experience with the San Francisco Unified School District Early Education Department has been as a Pre-K teacher, Literacy Coach and Workshop Presenter. She bring skills as a mentor teacher for the California Early Childhood Mentor program where she mentored San Francisco City College students in her classroom for over 6 years. She served as a National Early Childhood Cadre member for the American Federation of Teachers. As a cadre member she helped develop materials on professional development for Early Childhood teachers across the United States. Currently she is on leave for from her classroom working for the union doing advocacy work for teachers and paraprofessionals in the SFUSD Early Education Department. She also serves as a member of the West Contra Costa Unified School Board where she advocates for early childhood through high school students.
