Second Year of Preschool Teacher Training Program!
TWA & Pacific Oaks College at Singita Sabi Sand
With TWA Fellows already in country, July presents an exciting and diverse time for Teach With Africa. For the second straight year, Teach With Africa is delighted to partner with Pacific Oaks College to send a cohort of Preschool Teacher Trainers to the Singita Sabi Sand area in South Africa. Last year’s pilot program, which saw three teacher trainers collaborate with preschool caregivers at four different preschools, enjoyed great success that will continue to be built upon this summer. This year TWA and Pacific Oaks will be sending five highly qualified teacher trainers to the Singita Sabi Sand area, including two (Hadiyah Miller and Ijumaa Jordan) returning from last year and serving as lead curriculum planners.
Teach With Africa’s partnership with Pacific Oaks College is one that continues to flourish. Pacific Oaks “culture-centered educational approach,” which focuses on reciprocal exchanges of teaching and learning, aligns beautifully with TWA’s mission and methods. Team member Ijumaa Jordan said it best, explaining that in cross-cultural work “you have to go willing to learn from the people who you are going to work with.”
In addition to our two returning teacher trainers, this year’s team will include Dr. Carl Kalani Beyer, Founding Dean of the School of Education at Pacific Oaks; Dr. Suzanne Evans, Early Childhood Development and teacher training expert; and Elaine Merriweather, ECD specialist and highly qualified teacher mentor. The team will continue to provide Singita preschool teachers with desperately needed resources and classroom training, as well as focus on community-based projects such as parent involvement, health, safety and nutrition within the early childhood educational context. This year provides another opportunity to relay the importance of childhood learning through play, culturally relevant curriculum and illustrating the critical importance of education for the youngest learners.
