Hadiyah KD Miller – Singita Sabi Sand Preschools
2012 Early Childhood Education Pacific Oaks Fellow
“I am excited to use my experience to engage, support and facilitate the learning of other early childhood educators from underserved communities as part of my commitment to make information, knowledge and education available to everyone. And, I believe that my involvement in this program will provide new learning experiences for myself as an educator.”
Having spent more than ten years as a teacher in preschool classrooms, and another ten years teaching Early Childhood Education (ECE) and family studies at the college level, Hadiyah brings significant hands-on teaching and training/mentoring experience to the Teach With Africa/Pacific Oaks ECE teacher training team. She works with practicum students from Portland Community College and Portland State University, modeling teaching practices of guidance, creating developmentally and culturally appropriate curriculum and environments, and working with parents and supporting children with special needs in the classroom. She participates in the planning of Freedom Camp, an annual community educational event held on Martin Luther King Day about the civil rights movement and helping children find their voices in the face of inequity.
Hadiyah was a co-researcher in a participatory action research project in Jamaica focusing on education for children of color. Hadiyah graduated from Mills College with a BA in Psychology and a Nursery School Diploma; from Pacific Oaks College with an MA degree in Human Development and a specialization in Bicultural Development of Young Children. Hadiyah participated in Teach With Africa’s pilot ECE program with Singita as a Teacher Trainer Fellow in 2011.
