Susan Deemer – LEAP 1/2 Cape Town
2012 Faculty-in-Residence
“When I was a young student, My teachers and the staff at the school provided a caring, nurturing, and safe environment that allowed me to focus on school and leave the worries about home, at home. Because of this, teachers have played a very powerful role in my life and I think I became a teacher because I feel compelled to find a way to pay homage to the people and the profession that I admire most.”
Susan brings over 18 years of classroom experience with her to this journey to South Africa. At an early age, Susan was inspired by her own teachers and decided to “pay it forward” — She continues to be sustained by throwing herself into her work and putting children first. Since 1999 she has worked at Katherine Delmar Burke School in San Francisco as a 7th and 8th grade science teacher. Throughout that time she has played numerous roles, including Science department facilitator, Co-Chair of the Curriculum Council, and Softball Coach. Susan is incredibly excited about her opportunity to be a faculty-in-residence at the LEAP in South Africa and knows that this outward journey will result in an inward one as well.
