Annual Fundraiser Feb 3rd, Raising Our Voices

In the stunning St. Regis Hotel Ballroom overlooking the Yerba Buena Center on February 3rd, more than 250 supporters of Teach with Africa celebrated an evening of partnership and connection between the Bay Area and South Africa to break down barriers to education.

After cocktails, buffet and silent auction, the guests were seated for the evening program which included a performance by Vernon Bush from Glide Memorial Choir; music, dance and personal stories of life in post-apartheid South Africa by the students and faculty of LEAP Schools in Cape Town and Johannesburg, and a performance by the Bay Area’s own Castelmont High School Castleers – an internationally renowned choir from the Oakland public high school Community of Small Schools.
Hooman of the Sarah and Vinnie Morning Show on Alice @ 97.3 emceed the evening, and honoree John Gilmour – founder and director of the LEAP School in Cape Town, South Africa – addressed the attendees. A Fund-A-Need auction at the end of the program contributed to the more than $100,000 raised in total that evening to send educators to South Africa in June-August 2010 to respond to the dire educational crisis in that country caused by apartheid.
